Overview
This is a comprehensive two-day Red Cross course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for those requiring work training or those who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. Course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.
As of June 22, 2026, Ontario’s workplace first aid program aligns with the national CSA Z1210:24 standard, and this course has been renamed. What was called Standard First Aid is now officially Intermediate First Aid. It is the same course at the same level. Only the name has changed.
This course can be done in a blended format: Half the course can be taken online through our Red Cross portal, and half in class with our instructor.
Following successful completion of the course, participants receive proof-of-training wallet cards. Upon request, employers receive a record of training, attendance signatures, as well as copies of the wallet cards.

FAQ
How is this program taught?
This program is taught using an interactive discussion method. This means that all participants will be involved in discussing the content throughout the duration of the program. This method ensures that all participants receive and understand the information.
Are there accommodations for learning disabilities?
Participants that may have a learning disability or other impairment, such as language, literacy hearing, or vision, will be accommodated. This may involve having the questions read to the participant(s) by the instructor, the assistance of an interpreter supplied by the employer, or other means. Where disabilities or impairments are identified, please advise your contact when scheduling the course so all efforts to accommodate can be made.
How long is the certificate valid for?
3-year certification in Intermediate First Aid (Standard First Aid), CPR Level A or C and AED
Is my existing Standard First Aid certificate still valid?
Yes. Valid certificates issued by an approved provider up to June 21, 2026 remain valid until their normal expiry date. You do not need to retake the course early because of the name change. When it expires, renew with the equivalent Intermediate First Aid course.

Standard First Aid Is Now Intermediate First Aid
As of June 22, 2026, Ontario’s workplace first aid program aligns with the national Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z1210:24 standard. The most visible result of that change is the course names. Emergency First Aid is now Basic First Aid, and Standard First Aid is now Intermediate First Aid. The names are new, but the certification level, the skills taught, and the three-year validity period are the same.
You will likely see both the old and new names in use for some time. Your employer, your safety manual, or Ontario’s Regulation 1101 may still refer to “Standard First Aid,” while training providers and certificates use “Intermediate First Aid.” Both refer to the same level of workplace first aid training.
If you completed Standard First Aid before June 22, 2026, your certificate remains valid until its printed expiry date, and you do not need to retrain early because of the name change. When it comes time to renew, you will simply book the equivalent Intermediate First Aid course.
What Level Of Training Do You Need?
The two workplace first aid levels in Ontario are now called Basic First Aid (formerly Emergency First Aid) and Intermediate First Aid (formerly Standard First Aid). Basic First Aid is a one-day course covering the essential life-saving skills: CPR and AED, choking response, bleeding and shock management, and recognition of sudden medical emergencies. It meets the Regulation 1101 requirement for workplaces with one to five employees per shift.
Intermediate First Aid (this course) is a comprehensive two-day program that includes everything in the Basic level and adds deeper training in areas such as head and spine injuries, bone, muscle and joint injuries, environmental emergencies, and a wider range of sudden medical emergencies. It is the level required for workplaces with six or more employees per shift, and it is the certification most Ontario employers ask for. If your role, employer, or placement specifies “Standard First Aid,” this is the course you need.
